What An ASSYST Session IS…

  • a brief intervention to provide quick relief for the symptoms of Acute Stress by changing how vividly and emotionally activating or charged an experience feels. When the events are thought about in the future, they feel more like “just a memory” without the previously associated distressing emotions and somatic symptoms. Emotionally charged experiences are accessed (thought about) during the session. The end goal being to decrease the emotional and somatic response to these experiences.
  • an individual intervention conducted within a group setting. It is similar to how a yoga or meditation class allows individuals to move through their own individual experience within a group setting. This enables us to serve more people in less time than individual sessions.

What An ASSYST Session is NOT…

  • “a talking and sharing group.” Confidentiality is maintained throughout, as the procedure does not involve talking or describing the experience. Each person is doing their own individual work silently.
  • “a stress management/coping skills group” Unlike stress management, which teaches people how to manage the impact of increased stress through the use of coping skills, the goal of ASSYST is to reduce or eliminate disturbing emotions, images, body sensations or thoughts.
  • “a debriefing.”  Crisis debriefings are conducted after a crisis or critical incident is over.  ASSYST is designed to provide Acute Stress symptom relief both while the crisis is ongoing and after it is over.
